Data Sharing International Conference
September 20- 22, St Hugh's College, Oxford
With the aid of technology and the support of funders, data sharing is now possible on a scale that has not been possible before. With a click of a mouse, sequence and research datasets located in different countries around the world can be accessed with ease. Large infrastructures are being built to allow the comparison of many samples so that we can understand the aetiology of common diseases. These developments are changing scientific practice, as well as raising a number of technological, legal, ethical and social challenges for people working in the field of genomics. How should data-generators be rewarded for their efforts to the scientific community? Can we promise anonymity of research participants when whole sequences and phenotypic data are being used for research purposes? What is the best way to harmonise different datasets collected for different purposes? Should participants be fed back individual findings? Are our national research governance systems adequate to cope with global data sharing? The purpose of this conference is to bring together leaders in the field to discuss the issues raised by data sharing in genomics as well as bringing experts from other domains to add a new dimension to these debates. The conference will use a conversation format, using panels focussed on specific questions to generate insights into these issues.
Rather than traditional conference formats of pre-prepared presentations, we will develop a fully discursive approach in order to stimulate debate in this area and to develop current thinking within the research community. By asking speakers to address specific questions, and limiting presentations to 15 minutes followed by an open discussion, we hope to encourage an active process of developing ideas rather than simply transferring information from the speaker to the audience. See http://www.is-conference.com/ for some ideas on using technology to make things more interactive. We will have one opening plenary session, and plenaries at the beginning and end of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will have three panellists on each, which we will fund. The aim is for them to have people with diverse views and expertise but to be focussed on specific questions. We will have to decide what theme we think are the important ones for the plenaries.
